ABSTRACT
Research study is to find solution of reducing heat transfer from a house’s roof. The fiber cement roof is the main focus of the study due to its low heat transfer resistant. It is a problem of heat transfer into the house. The component that improve heat transfer for the fiber cement roof are selected for the study. Three solutions are added double roof with 20 cm. cavity, attached 3-inch thick fiberglass insulation and installed aluminum foil. The study used 1.0×1.0x1.0 m. box with 15 degree faced south roof for the experiments.
The experiment collected temperature data every 10 minutes for 4 days. The results show that: 1) Box Experiment 1: Single fiber cement roofing without insulation. The average temperature in the middle of the box is 33.27 degrees Celsius. 2) Box Experiment 2: Single fiber cement roofing with 3-inch thick fiberglass insulation. The average temperature in the middle of the box is 31.52 degrees Celsius. 3) Box Experiment 3: Single fiber cement roofing with aluminum foil. The average temperature in the middle of the box is 31.01 degrees Celsius. 4) Box Experiment 4 Double fiber cement roofing with 20 cm. cavity. The average temperature in the middle of the box is 32.26 degrees Celsius.
The study shows that a single fiber cement roofing with 3-inch thick fiberglass insulation and a single fiber cement roofing with aluminum foil are effective for heat transfer from roof. The aluminum foil solution performs slightly better than the 3-inch thick fiberglass insulation one. However, comparison of the material cost, it has been found that aluminum foil is about 90 bath per sq.m. cheaper than 3-inch thick fiberglass insulation. So, the result of this study can be used for choice selection for a house’s fiber cement roof component in the future.
